STEPSCAN: THE GOLD STANDARD IN GAIT AND BALANCE ASSESSMENT EQUIPMENT
The Stepscan System is a reliable, high quality, and industry-compliant pressure measurement and movement analysis solution for both the medical and security sectors. Comprised of interlocking electronic floor tiles and sophisticated software, Stepscan can be configured according to need – from a single tile to a full floor – creating an expandable, customizable measurement platform.
The accuracy and precision of the Stepscan System is second to none. Each 60cm x 60cm tile contains 14,400 sensors that can detect and record pressures anywhere between 10 and 1,600 kPa. At a sampling rate of 100 Hz, this allows for very accurate and very detailed measurements of gait, balance and underfoot pressure distribution. The Stepscan System is a medical device registered with Health Canada and USFDA. The Stepscan team has an in-depth Quality Control system in place and takes great pride in their product. The Stepscan System is one of the only systems in the world that meets the standards outlined by the Pedobarographic Group of the International Foot and Ankle Biomechanics community for the technical requirements and performance of medical plantar pressure measurement devices.
Because of the proven accuracy of our system, we have been involved in several projects with research groups who have used our system as “the gold standard” to measure the accuracy of both motion capture camera systems and pressure sensitive insoles.
The Stepscan System includes a modular tile system and a custom and comprehensive software program. The tiles can be used as:
- a single unit to assess balance, dynamic pressure and concussion,
- a 4 (or more) tile linear pedway to assess all single tile measurements noted above plus mobility, fall risk and gait
- or a large platform (20+ tiles) for continuous monitoring of gait and balance for a large population with automatic trending and alerts or for gait biometrics access control applications.
There are several versions of the Stepscan Software available depending on your requirements.
The software for a single tile system allows assessment of balance, dynamic pressure and concussion.
For a linear pedway of 4 or more tiles the software allows assessment of mobility, fall risk, gait, balance, dynamic pressure and concussion.
There are other versions of the Stepscan software used for continuous monitoring. These can be used for gait biometric access control systems and for medical applications. They allow continuous monitoring of large tile platforms (20+ tiles).
In a medical application, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Ultra Wide Band (UWB) anchors and wearable beacons can personally identify recorded gait information for all persons walking on the tiles 24/7. The recorded data is processed daily, trends are analyzed and alerts are emailed to the appropriate people automatically.
An example of an ideal (medical) location for this type of system would be a hallway in an assisted living facility where residents will pass over the tiles several times per day. It allows passive and automated gait and balance assessments. Automated alert criteria can be customized as per the user’s requirements (ie. if someone has a decline in specific gait criteria over a certain period of time).

Stepscan's innovative technology tracks patterns of mobility and plantar pressures as subjects move across the floor. Automatic data analysis satisfies your unique data requirements.
Stepscan: Mobility Assessment & Analysis Tech
Stepscan Technologies manufactures the Stepscan® System, a pressure-sensitive electronic floor tile device paired with proprietary software which captures and analyzes the patterns of mobility and balance in subjects as they move across the floor.
In a medical setting, the Stepscan System provides objective measures of a patient’s walking ability and vestibular (sway/balance) function to determine baseline measures, level of impairment, and potential treatment options. Stepscan's product is being used in hospitals and clinics internationally in applications ranging from pre-surgery planning and post-operative assessment of children with Cerebral Palsy to stroke rehabilitation, concussion screening, and fitting of prosthetic limbs.
Stepscan is trusted by some of the world’s most prestigious institutions including the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne Australia, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Affairs Canada, the University of California, the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, and the University of New Brunswick.
Beyond clinical applications, Stepscan's technology has applications in industries ranging from medical research to competitive sports, and from security and defense to senior wellness.
